Survival: Spoken Word.
They say wounds take time to heal;
they say time heals everything. Well,
I am wounded — guess time will heal
me.
But how long will it take?
Now that it is in a broken state —
my heart, I mean. How soon will it
get out of the ICU?
They tell me I don’t look it; they’re not
even aware it’s been there.
No worries. I’ve been coping.
I’ve grieved enough. I’ve smiled a lot;
sometimes too occupied — it goes ignored.
It’s worked too hard and loved beyond words.
I’m starting to feel it go numb. Can it be resuscitated? Gradually emotions are fading out — it’s building resistance,
slowly getting cold.
It’s losing grip. It’s tired, it’s scared
and so has built a wall — a wall
where no sunlight can reach,
where love will not search.
It’s numb.
It’s cold.
It’s gone — for now.
Will it ever return?
I guess time will tell.

About Survival
The poem is about a broken heart. One that has given all and is left empty. In order to survive, the heart goes numb by shutting out every feeling or desire to fall in love. The poet reveals that only time will tell if the heart will be open to love again.

They say real love makes us vulnerable. As such, the happiness is tenfold but so is the heartache. If your heart needs to be closed, so be it. Close it, grieve it and let yourself heal. Just always listen to your heart. If we truly listen, our heart will tell us when it needs us to close it to heal and grieve & when it needs us to open wide. Hey, our heart does so much work for us. We own our heart this much to not listen to it :-)…
Thank you so much for the encouraging words. I truly appreciate it.

This is a wonderful piece. It is sad but it gives us hope that we can love again despite all the heartbreak.
I personally experienced this. We may feel numb from all the pain but one day, we’ll just wake up free and ready to love again.
You are right Clarice. Sometimes, it just feels like the wound won’t heal but it does eventually.
Wow! Such a beautiful piece. It’s hard to imagine opening up again after a heartbreak–the idea that you may get hurt again versus the idea that you may never have a chance at a new great thing because of closing yourself off. Thanks for sharing!

It is true that only time can tell when a broken heart will heal. This piece resonates with a time in my past, however, I was blessed with the grace to recover from the hurting. Great job in writing this piece!
