2 Years Late: Tom Walker’s Leave A Light On (Review and Cover).

Please read before playing or downloading the cover below.

I first heard the song in the 2019 movie “For Love or Money”. It was played a couple of times and I was like: this is really dope. I decided to search for it on YouTube and I fell in love with it.

I soon realized that I was two years late. My goodness! Where was I when the song came out in 2017? Turns out, I wasn’t the only who was left out — none of my friends had heard the song before.

After a little research, I discovered that Tom Walker’s song is based on a friend of his who was struggling with drug addiction.

He urges his friend to get help and he( Tom) will “leave a light on” if and when he wants to talk about it. Click here for more information.

I particularly liked the fact that Tom has a very strong message. I loved his voice. The melody was just beautiful. The song in my opinion is a reminder that no one has to suffer in silence because no one can survive on their own. We all need someone to leave the light on for us sometimes.

As soon as I heard it, something in me decided to do a cover despite the fact that I am not a professional singer. I’ve never done any voice training and I most certainly do not know anything about notes.

I only know chords — but I have no idea what notes make up a chord. You’re probably wondering how possible that is. Well, Google made that possible by drawing diagrams and showing finger placements on guitars. I taught myself how to play the guitar using Google.

What that translates to is this: I am no professional but I’m a songwriter and poet. These are things I find very easy to do. I create melodies in my head and try to bring them to life in the best way I can.

I’m a painfully shy person so I’ve never had the courage to walk into a studio. I usually just record my works on my phone, use some softwares to edit and leave it at that.

But when I heard Tom Walker’s Leave A Light On, I just had to face my fears. I decided I was going to do a cover regardless of how it turned out — there’s always a first time. I chose this moment. I needed to get out what I had in my head.

So I linked up with an old friend who is an awesome producer — but really underrated. I told him what I had in mind. There were so many things going on in my head. I wanted to have an African flavour. I also wanted the voicing to a have a soft touch of reggae and a bit of rap while still maintaining Tom Walker’s vibe.

What can I say? He did a really good job. But when I heard my voice, I wasn’t so pleased — he told me that it was very okay for someone with no professional training. Maybe he was right. Maybe not. But I’m glad that I was (for the first time), able to walk into a studio and get something done.

I know with time and more practice, my voice will sound the way it does in my head. So I’ve decided to share this with you. It’s not the best of covers but it’s my first studio work.

I am very open to positive criticism. And I would really love an honest feedback. I get it if you don’t like my version — no need to pretend — perhaps, it may not appeal to you. It’s totally fine. No hard feelings. Just please be honest. Thank you.

My version:

Tom Walker’s Leave A Light On Cover|| Viano Dee

Lyrics:

Stanza 1:

The second someone mentioned you were all alone
I could feel the trouble coursing through your veins
Now I know, it’s got a hold

Just a phone called left unanswered, had me sparking up
These cigarettes won’t stop me wondering where you are
Don’t let go, keep a hold

If you look into the distance, there’s a house upon the hill
Guiding like a lighthouse to a place where you’ll be safe to feel our grace
’cause we’ve all made mistakes
If you’ve lost your way…

Chorus:

I will leave the light on
Hey…
I will leave the light on
Oh…
I will leave the light on
Hey.. Hey.. Hey..
I will leave the light on
I will leave the light on
I will leave the light on

Verse 2

Tell me what’s been happening, what’s been on your mind
Lately you’ve been searching for a darker place to hide– that’s alright
But if you carry on abusing, you’ll be robbed from us
And I refuse to lose another friend to drugs

Just come home, don’t let go
You’ve got your friends on the low
They’ve got your back, they’ll never ever let you walk alone
And when you bleed, they’re bleeding
They’re begging you, they’re pleading
For you stop abusing, consuming, it’s killing, see

If you look into the distance, there’s a house upon the hill
Guiding like a lighthouse to a place where you’ll be safe to feel our grace
’cause we’ve all made mistakes
If you’ve lost your way…

Chorus:

I will leave the light on
Hey…
I will leave the light on
Oh…
I will leave the light on
Hey.. Hey.. Hey..
I will leave the light on
I will leave the light on
I will leave the light on

If you look into the distance, there’s a house upon the hill
Guiding like a lighthouse, it’s a place where you’ll be safe to feel at grace
and if you’ve lost your way
If you’ve lost your way (I will leave the light on)

And I know you do not know oh, but I need you to be brave
Hiding from the truth ain’t gonna make this all okay
I’ll see your pain if you don’t feel our grace And you’ve lost your way
I will leave the light on

I will leave the light on
Believe me, I will leave the light on.

I hadn’t heard the original song myself. This sounds like an interesting adaptation of the song. It’s sometimes nice to hear them from a different singer with a different vibe.

Truth be told I haven’t heard this song either so we are in the same boat! I had a listen to the song and it has almost a sentimental vibe that I really like. It’s very soothing and uplifting. Thanks for sharing!

I’m always years late because I tend to see the videos of songs years later. Anyway, I love your version too. So touched.

What background instrumentals do you use? I’m a singer too and would want to know any beats apps I can use on my phone or laptop.

Amazing!

Thank you for your kind words, Dalene. I’m glad you found my version entertaining. As for this particular song, I just told the producer what I wanted.

For other songs I’ve written, I usually use my guitar to create the melodies. I record on Spreaker (an app on android) because I realize it is louder than other apps I’ve tried. I then edit using wavepad.

For my poetry with background music, I download free beats which I merge with my already recorded poetry and mix them using Audio Mp3 Editor (android app). That’s about it.

Wow, this is very powerful. Just reading the whole story about the original song (I didn’t know it either) and how it touched you and your journey to recording it… and then to hear your actual recording. This is super moving and very inspiring. I’m glad you took the leap and did this!

I didn’t know this about the original song, it being about his friend and drug addiction. I heard it differently now.  Your cover of this song was quite good. I really enjoyed it, there were a few parts I felt ran together, maybe it was nerves. But well done!
